Hi
Just wondering how long anyone waited in a 2 bed if there are 5 people and 3 children hoping for a 3 bed
does the council rehouse you automatically as overcrowded or do you join the priority list and bid for properties?
many thanks

i think you have to keep bidding, depends what area you are in, at the moment people in Brentwood are getting the new places they built, i have a friend whos got to boys under 7 and was given a 3 bed house, but another mate whos on a different council was given a 2 bed and she has two girls, x

I would be just happy to have a council house. Our house has been sold and we are still not a priority, so rather than be physically homeless I have to not get Christmas presents for my Children and pay upfront for a private property. Its not as if you are all living on top of eachother is it?

My sister has lived in a 3 bedroomed house (one room only big enough just to squeeze single bed in) with 2 adults and 4 kids and she's been there 12years without being successful.
Council say because she has 2 boys and 2 girls they can share a bedroom but the oldest is 22 and youngest is 12 and the room really isn't big enough for them both to share, so DS1 has the main bedroom, 2 girls share other and youngest has smallest room and mum and dad sleep in the living room!!!

seeing as you are overcrowded you will have to join the bidding que.
high priority who are often housed fastest (within a few months) are usually people who are giving up a larger property for a smaller one, people who have to leave their home because of fire or flood, tenants who need to move so new houses can be built, serious harrassment, urgent medical needs and multple need eg overcrowding plus urgent medical needs.
in my area the wait for a 3 bedroom is on average 4 years based on just overcrowding being a need to move
maybe consider private renting

you have to go onto the list as the council do not do it automatically. also you will most likely not be a priority. in your tennancy agreement it will say how many people can stay there without being overcroweded. i am in a two bed flat and my limit is 5 people but each child under the age of 12 counts as half a person (even though they take up the same amount of space, so i dont know how they work this out lol) good luck and hope it all goes well for you. x x x

My missus lives in a two bedroom house and has 9 occupants including herself. She today had an appointment with birmingham city council and was told that she cannot move due to not having enough points. We are both absolutely fuming especially me. How the hell can they keep 9 people in a two bedroom house?. We need help as I cant see this as being legal??..

Unfortunately it is down to supply and demand. Each council has a limited stock and not enough houses for everyone. This is why they have a waiting list priority system, based on need, as well as a bidding system.
If there are people with more points / higher priority, they get housed more quickly. Though it is not desirable to be living in overcrowded conditions, there are far worse situations to be in, such as homeless with young children; unable to live in a property due to illness / disability; violent situations etc..

I've been in band B for over a year and still not getting very far, I only got on band B because environmental health said I was overcrowded otherwise I would still be on band C and that is about 11year wait..

Hi becca do you mind me asking how many of you there are and how many rooms you have? Im trying to get a b but its proving difficult, im in C and the wait can be anywhere between 5-10 years.
